Business Loans and Leasing in Estonia: How to Get a Company Ready for Financing

Estonian banks and leasing companies read your figures before they read your pitch. Transparent books and a filed annual report do most of the persuading.

Sooner or later a growing company in Estonia needs outside money: equipment on lease, working capital on credit. For Estonian companies and e-residents alike, the decision is made on the numbers. Banks and leasing companies examine financial indicators closely, which puts transparent accounting and a filed annual report at the centre of the process.

Business loans and leasing in Estonia: which one fits the purpose

For an Estonian OÜ the choice depends on what the money is for.

  • Leasing is used to acquire fixed assets such as vehicles and machinery. It usually needs a smaller down payment and is simpler to arrange.
  • A business loan provides cash that can go to any purpose: working capital, investment, development. It comes with a more thorough assessment and stricter collateral requirements.

What credit institutions actually evaluate

Estonian lenders concentrate on a short list of data points, and every one of them comes straight out of your bookkeeping.

  1. 1Solvency: the profit and loss statement and the cash flow behind it.
  2. 2Collateral: the assets carried on the balance sheet and how they are valued.
  3. 3Reputation: the company's history in the Business Register, including whether annual reports were filed on time.
  4. 4Business plan: a justification for what the funds will be used for.

The third point is the one companies underestimate. A late or missing annual report is visible to anyone, and it answers the lender's question about reliability before the conversation starts.

Where an accountant makes a difference

Preparing for financing is not the same job as monthly bookkeeping. It means presenting the same accurate figures in the form a credit committee expects to see.

  • Financial preparation: the balance sheet and reporting arranged so the company's real position is clear to the lender.
  • Documentation: a package that meets the requirements of Estonian banks, including written justifications and cash flow forecasts.
  • Timing: gaps in past reports cleared before the application, not during it.

How the process starts

  1. 1Consultation. We look at the current financial position and what the money is meant to achieve. A consultation starts from €80 + VAT.
  2. 2Clean-up. Accounting is brought fully in order; ongoing bookkeeping starts from €99.9 + VAT per month.
  3. 3Application. The bank or leasing company receives a complete, prepared set of documents.

Preparing the package on your own costs time and can still end in a rejection. Having the figures reviewed before the application is the cheaper route.
